|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
August 15th, 2008 Dear Parents and Colleagues, Prospective Clients: Eaton Arrowsmith School continues to receive a high level of inquiries as to the nature of the Arrowsmith Program and the impact it has on children and young adults with learning disabilities. We have had visits from Ministry’s of Education across Canada, and from both private and public school teachers and special education administrators. The administration get calls from the United States on a weekly basis and from as far as away as Dubai. In fact, Eaton Arrowsmith School has three families that moved from California to attend the school. It is exciting to see their amazement as they finish their in-school observations of students working on their cognitive programs. There is hope that both public and private school institutions will continue to implement Arrowsmith Programs in their schools. The admissions interest grows weekly as we move towards our fourth year of operation in Vancouver. Currently, we have openings in the young adult, high school and elementary programs for 2008-2009 school year. This interest in Eaton Arrowsmith School is due to the feedback both parents and students are giving us regarding the impact the Arrowsmith Program is having on their lives http://www.eatonarrowsmithschool.com/vancouver/news.htm It is important to note that Eaton Arrowsmith School (EAS) has focused on becoming involved in the research community at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Over the last six months EAS has begun the process of forming research partnerships with both the Brain Research Centre and Department of Psychology at UBC. As a result of these positive meetings, additional research will be conducted over the next three years on the Arrowsmith Program and Learning Disabilities. The research will focus on neuroplasticity and how children with learning disabilities can remediate cognitive weaknesses such as memory, processing speed, social perception, auditory processing and reasoning. In the book, Train Your Mind Change Your Brain: How A New Science Reveals Our Extraordinary Potential To Transform Ourselves, the author, Sharon Begley writes, “As the discoveries of neuroplasticity, and this self-directed neuroplasticity, trickle down to clinics and schools and plain old living rooms, the ability to willfully change the brain will become central part of our lives – and of our understanding of what it means to be human.” The Arrowsmith Program has undergone a number of research evaluations with excellent results. The most recent research results were conducted through a grant from the Donner Canadian Foundation. The results noted that cognitive functioning was improved in students enrolled in the program over 1 to 3 years, with the most significant results after 3 years.
